Google's new Generative AI performance report shows whether your pages are appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here's exactly where to find it and what the numbers actually mean.
Google has started rolling out a new report inside Search Console called the Generative AI performance report. It shows, for the first time, how often your website's pages are turning up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI-written answers that now sit above the normal search results for a large share of queries. It's free, it lives inside a tool most businesses already have access to, and most people haven't opened it yet.
AI Overviews is the paragraph Google now writes at the top of many search results, generated from a handful of sources instead of showing ten blue links. AI Mode is a fuller AI-driven search experience some users get instead of the traditional results page. Both pull from real websites to build their answer. Until now, if your page was one of those sources, you had almost no way of knowing.
In Search Console, go to Performance reports in the left-hand menu and open Generative AI performance report (Search). If you don't see it yet, that's not a mistake on your end. Google has confirmed it's rolling this out gradually to a subset of properties, so access depends on your site and how much AI-generated traffic it's already attracting.
The report gives you impressions only, meaning how often a page of yours appeared inside an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. You can break that down by page, by country, by device, and by date. What it doesn't give you is which specific searches triggered those appearances, and it doesn't show clicks. So you'll know that you're showing up, and roughly where and on what pages, but not the exact question someone asked or whether they clicked through afterwards.
That gap matters less than it sounds. Research from Ahrefs and Seer Interactive this year found that when an AI-generated answer appears, clicks to the top normal search result drop by more than half. But being named inside the AI answer itself drives roughly a third more clicks than not being named at all. Impressions in this report are the leading signal that you're in that first group instead of the second, even without click data attached.
For years, the only honest answer to "are we showing up in AI search" was a guess. Now there's a number.
If you have access to the report, look at which pages are showing impressions and which aren't. If your homepage or your main service pages show zero, that's worth a conversation about why. If a page you didn't expect is picking up impressions, that tells you something about what Google's AI considers a trustworthy source on that topic, and it's worth understanding what that page is doing right.
If you don't have access yet, you're not behind, you're just not in the current rollout group. Check back every few weeks rather than assuming it'll never arrive. Either way, the direction is the same. Google has quietly admitted that business owners deserve to see this data, which means it's about to become a normal part of how visibility gets measured, the same way ranking position used to be the only number anyone checked.
I'm not here to tell you a report inside Search Console will fix your marketing. It won't. What I am here to say is this: go and look at the number. It's the first honest one you've had.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
